Elon Musk’s X to suspend monetisation for users posting fake AI videos of Iran war without

Social media company X has introduced a new policy that will suspend users on the platform from revenue payment for posting AI-manipulated videos during wartime without labels amid the ongoing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.

The platform’s head of product, Nikita Bier, said in a statement on Tuesday that it is important for the public to have access to authentic information on X during armed conflicts.

He added that users found liable for sharing fake videos during conflicts without attaching a disclaimer would be barred from the Creator Revenue Sharing programme for 90 days, with subsequent violations attracting a permanent suspension.

“Today, we are revising our Creator Revenue Sharing policies to maintain the authenticity of content on the timeline and prevent manipulation of the programme. During times of war, it is critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technologies, it is trivial to create content that can mislead people.

“Starting now, users who post AI-generated videos of an armed conflict—without adding a disclosure that it was made with AI—will be suspended from Creator Revenue Sharing for 90 days. Subsequent violations will result in a permanent suspension from the program,” Mr Bier said.

Mr Bier stressed that it is important for the public to trust X as a reliable source of information during critical moments.

“This will be flagged to us by any post with a community note or if the content contains metadata (or other signals) from generative AI tools. We will continue to refine our policies and product to ensure X can be trusted during these critical moments,” he stated.

Observers noted that the policy will come as a huge blow to some sections of netizens who are in the business widely known as ‘farming’ by deliberately publishing false content on X to generate reactions for the purpose of earning money through the Creator Revenue Sharing programme.
