Rafael Nadal told the moment his career started to go downhill

Rafael Nadal enjoyed a legendary career, and perhaps the greatest ever of any tennis player.

The Spaniard captured a total of 92 ATP titles, 22 of which were secured at the biggest stages in the sport: Grand Slams.

Nadal was able to compete well into his late 30s, but injuries did play their part in much of the King of Clay’s playing days.

In 2023, he was sidelined with a hip injury for most of the year, having only played at the United Cup and the Australian Open

Nadal’s campaign at Melbourne Park that season came to an abrupt end in the first round against Mackenzie McDonald, losing to him in straight sets.

Seeded first at the Australian Open in 2023, Nadal fell 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 to the American while battling with a hip injury.

As per Clay, McDonald said of the clash: “For me that was a big match, the biggest match of my career, beating Rafa at a Slam.

“I was playing some of the best tennis I’ve ever played that day, and getting that win was special, but I knew he was hurting in the third set.

I was absolutely ripping the ball. It was sad to see him go out that way. I felt like that was really the fall for him, but in the moment, I had to keep my composure.

“Because even defeating Nadal when he’s injured was a tough thing to do, so I had to stay composed. It was sad to see.”

Mackenzie McDonald says if Rafael Nadal messaged him after the match

Asked what Nadal said to him after the match, McDonald said: Not much. He probably praised me on Instagram or whatever he wrote afterwards, something like kudos and that it was a great match.

And I really thought I played a great match. Mixed feelings… it was sad to see one of our best champions get hurt against me.”

Nadal made his return to action at the Brisbane International in 2024, where he won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals.

His best run that year came in Bastaad, where Nadal made the final before losing to Nuno Borges.

The last match of his career was played at the Davis Cup: A loss to Botic van de Zandschulp.
