Carlos Alcaraz and Stan Wawrinka could be set for a first-time-ever meeting in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Wawrinka said it was his ‘dream’ to face Alcaraz in 2026, which will be his final year on the ATP Tour before retirement.
The Swiss star needs to beat Sebastian Baez in his first round match in order to make his dream become a reality.
Alcaraz and Wawrinka trained together in Monte-Carlo and they shared social media messages with one another ahead of their potential match.
Carlos Alcaraz and Stan Wawrinka share messages
On Instagram, Wawrinka shared a picture with Alcaraz after their training session at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
The Spanish star simply wrote: “STAN THE MAN” to the player he could be lining up against in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Wawrinka has been awarded a wild card for his final-ever Monte-Carlo Masters and he could finish his career at the tournament against the best player in the world.
The Swiss star is a previous winner of the clay court Masters event, having lifted the trophy back in 2014 when he beat Roger Federer in the final.
Sebastian Baez could stop Stan Wawrinka’s dream match
Baez will be hoping to spoil the party in Monte-Carlo, as he plays Wawrinka in the first round of the competition.
The Argentine is an excellent clay court player and he has proved himself on other surfaces already in 2026.
Baez reached just his second hardcourt final at the ASB Classic earlier this year and he was impressive at the United Cup.
He even defeated Wawrinka at the United Cup, taking out the multi-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets.
Baez has more than enough about him to defeat Wawrinka again and the latter will need to be at his best to ensure he plays Alcaraz.
