Emma Raducanu is still using crutches more than a week after withdrawing from Wimbledon due to a stress fracture.
If you recall, the British tennis star was spotted wearing a protective boot at The All England Club just days before the start of the tournament. After missing practice for a couple of days and testing her ankle, the 2021 US Open champion ultimately decided to withdraw from The Championships.
After pulling out of Wimbledon, the 23-year-old was spotted using crutches to walk. Now, more than a week after withdrawing from The Championships, she has been pictured still using crutches.
What did Raducanu say when announcing her Wimbledon withdrawal?
After practicing on Sunday – a day before her scheduled first-round match against Antonia Ruzic – the 33rd-ranked Briton held a pre-tournament press conference and confirmed that she was dealing with a right lower leg issue. A few hours later, she announced her Wimbledon withdrawal through Instagram
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but sadly I’ve had to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon,” Raducanu said in a message posted on her Instagram Story.
“I’ve done everything possible to try to get to the start line tomorrow but after a final scan tonight, the niggle I’ve been managing has developed into a stress fracture and I’ve been medically advised to stop pushing through. Playing at Wimbledon, in front of a home crowd, means everything to me, so this is really difficult to process.”
Will she be able to start her North American hard-court swing in time?
The former world No. 10’s next scheduled tournament is the Mubadala DC Open, which starts in Washington on July 27.
While there’s still plenty of time before the tournament begins, the British tennis star still needing crutches to walk isn’t the most encouraging sign.
However, the most important thing for Raducanu is to make a full recovery and be able to at least finish her Grand Slam season at the US Open.
