Philadelphia 76ers superstar LeBron James has a plethora of records to his name, but arguably his most insane record is being the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
Heading into the 2026-27 NBA season, James already has 43,440 points to his name. But NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal believes James wants to further increase the gap so that the record remains untouched for eternity.

During a recent episode of The Old Man and the Three podcast, O’Neal labeled James a ‘modest arrogant’ person and quickly explained the reason behind it.
Bron is a modest arrogant guy. For example, he’s loving the fact that he’s the number one scorer in the league. But guess what? I’m gonna put this s___ so far out of reach, nobody will ever do it,” Shaq said.
He added, “I looked at it the other day. LeBron’s at 45 [K]. He’s still averaging 20. He’s gonna mess around and be at 50,000 points. Guess what? Me and you both will probably be dead before somebody passes that up.
“The only way they pass it up is a four-point shot and a five-point shot, and then you get a guy like Steph Curry, who averages 50 points. So, LeBron thinks like that.”
O’Neal concluded by saying if he were in James’ place, he would play for at least two more years, put the records out of reach, and also win an NBA Championship in the process.
