LeBron James is often perceived as one of the most influential figures in the basketball world. Widely regarded by many as one of the best players in NBA history, James is known for his excellence both on and off the basketball court.
While LeBron James‘ reputation and legacy have been cemented by his accomplishments, something that should be ironclad, the 41-year-old is still subject to immense criticism from the media. To that end, however, former NBA player Kwame Browntook matters to new heights.
During a recent episode of “The Basketball Show HQ,” Kwame Brown boldly accused LeBron James of destroying the careers of several NBA players, including some of his former teammates on the Los Angeles Lakers like Russell Westbrook.
“I thought LeBron James was a regular individual, and then I realized he’s a part of a group,” Brown began. “LeBron James is a machine; it’s a marketing machine. He’s not an individual. And so, once I realized that, when you go up against a machine, it gives off toxic waste. So what makes it look good? It destroys things around it.”
“If you look at the careers that he’s destroyed – Westbrook, all the various things before he even started. You got Dalton Knecht because of his son; he didn’t get a chance to develop. And he comes there with Andrew Wiggins as the number one draft pick; they make up stories about him to trade him for Kevin Love.”
Kwame Brown’s remarks may seem outrageous, but upon closer inspection, there is a pattern that demands some attention.
As Brown noted, before joining the Lakers, Russell Westbrook was still perceived as an elite NBA point guard. However, when the fit issues between him, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis became more prevalent, Westbrook was routinely made the scapegoat for the team’s shortcomings.
Although this narrative holds, especially in light of Westbrook’s NBA career trajectory following his departure from L.A., the remaining examples do not spark the same sense of curiosity.
When noting Dalton Knecht‘s drop-off during his rookie campaign and the plateau he has hit since, it is difficult to blame it all on Bronny James, who is also struggling to earn consistent playing time. Meanwhile, with no factual evidence to support Andrew Wiggins‘ trade story, it is difficult to abide by Brown’s story alone.
In many ways, the mention of Knecht and Wiggins could be reflective of Brown’s personal animosity toward James. Still, the Westbrook incident does lay a solid foundation for the former NBA player’s follow-up prediction, as he stated:
“It’s just like, I know what that’s like. And when I see him go places, I’m like, ‘Okay, I want to know which player is going to have to be taken away from for this machine to still look like what it is.’ We know now. It’s going to be V.J. Edgecombe and the center, Embiid. If Embiid doesn’t play 65 or 70 games and they don’t win the championship, it’s going to be Edgecombe or Embiid.”
LeBron James’ decision to join the Philadelphia 76erswas one of the landmark moves of the 2026 offseason. For obvious reasons, it was heavily criticized, but with the spotlight on Philadelphia‘s star-studded core, failure is not an option.
In this regard, many have already hinted that James’ arrival in Philadelphia will affect the development of players like Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe. But with Kwame Brown insinuating that any shortcomings during the 2026-27 campaign could trigger large-scale changes within the 76ers’ core, which could even involve offloading Joel Embiid, only time will tell how things play out.
In all fairness to Brown, this wouldn’t be the first time someone has referred to LeBron James as a toxic person. But considering how far-fetched some stories might seem, it is equally difficult to label him as such.
